Six Basic Nutrients and Their Functions


There are six classes of essential nutrients necessary for human survival: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals and water. The best way to get these nutrients is by following a varied, healthy diet featuring plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, nonfat dairy products and healthy fats. Dietary requirements vary with age and sex. Consult your physician or a registered dietitian about the diet that is best for you.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are a major energy source. Along with providing fuel for physical activity, they also power the body's involuntary functions, including heartbeat, breathing and digestive processes. Food sources of carbohydrates include grains and grain products, vegetables, fruits, legumes, dairy products and sugars. Carbohydrates should supply 40 to 60 percent of the average person's caloric intake.

Proteins

Skin, muscle and bones depend on dietary protein for normal growth, development and maintenance. Getting enough protein is rarely a problem in industrialized countries such as the U.S. Complete proteins from animal sources contain all the amino acids your body needs for normal functioning. Plant sources only contain incomplete proteins, meaning some amino acids are missing. If you do not eat much meat, poultry, fish or other animal products, eat a variety of protein-rich plant foods such as beans, nuts and whole grains to ensure an optimal combination of amino acids.

Lipids

You may think of lipids, or fats, as dietary enemies, but they are as necessary to the body's normal functioning as the other essential nutrients. Dietary fat helps the absorption of vitamins, supports cell membrane health and helps maintain the immune system. Not all fats are equal. Choose healthy unsaturated fats such as olive oil and nut oil instead of saturated fats from fatty meats.

Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins are micronutrients, meaning the body needs them in small quantities. Vitamins are organic compounds produced by living beings, while minerals are inorganic elements that originate in the earth. Vitamins and minerals support the body's biochemical processes. Each of the vitamins and minerals has a distinct function, including regulating metabolism, guarding the cells from oxidative stress and synthesizing hormones.

Water

Comprising 60 percent of your body weight, water is vital for the normal functioning of all your body's systems. It helps cleanse your body of wastes and toxins, carries essential nutrients to your cells, lubricates your joints and helps maintain your body temperature. While the rule is to drink eight glasses of water daily, this maxim is not supported by scientific evidence. If your urine output is about 6 cups per day, your urine is slightly yellowish or clear and you don't often feel thirsty, your water intake is likely adequate.

When Is the Best Time to Take Multivitamins?


Most people might need to take vitamins, also they can get the nutrients from the food they eat, others opt to take vitamins daily so their bodies absorb all essential nutrients. Women who are pregnant typically take prenatal vitamins on the recommendation of their doctors. People often wonder whether there is a “best time” to take vitamins. Medline Plus notes that in most cases, you should take vitamins once per day. It may help to take your vitamins with a meal rather than on an empty stomach or take them at a different time of day. Although the upset stomach could just be a side effect, some vitamins in high amounts can cause nausea. Consult your physician if you experience nausea frequently or if the nausea doesn't go away.

Minerals in Multivitamins

Multivitamins might include minerals such as iron, or you might also take iron in prescription form or as a separate supplement. But calcium, which is also in some multivitamins, can interfere with iron absorption, according to an October 2010 article in the “International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research.” Women and children, who are at greater risk for iron deficiency than men, are also encouraged to eat or drink dairy products because they contain calcium. Because the calcium can inhibit iron absorption, doctors often caution people not to take multivitamins that contain iron with dairy products or calcium supplements.

Medication Interactions

Medications can interact with multivitamins when they are taken at the same time, according to Dr. Leo Galland in an April 2010 article in the “Huffington Post.” Galland notes that statin drugs -- which lower cholesterol -- can block the effects of vitamin E, while vitamin E interferes with the effects of the statin. Statins and vitamin E should not be taken together. Some medications and vitamins can interact no matter what time you take them. The blood thinner warfarin, for example, can interact with multivitamins that contain vitamin K and increase your risk of bleeding.

Flexibility with Regularity

Some vitamin manufacturers recommend you always take vitamins with a meal and at the same time each day. You might find it easiest to incorporate vitamins into a morning routine, while others prefer to take them at bedtime. The exact time is less important than taking them regularly. As long as you follow your doctor’s recommendations and consider potential problems such as medication interactions, you can take your multivitamins at whatever time of day works best for you.

Multivitamins are a good way to make sure that you are getting all of the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs to be healthy. Even if you have a well-rounded diet, with a variety of foods, it is still possible for you to have dietary gaps, in which you are missing one or more valuable vitamins. Multivitamins can fill in these gaps, and keep your body functioning well.

6 Essential Nutrients and Their Functions




An essential nutrient is a nutrient that the body cannot synthesize on its own -- or not to an adequate amount -- and must be provided by the diet. These nutrients are necessary for the body to function properly. The six essential nutrients include carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and water.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the main energy source for the brain. Without carbohydrates, the body could not function properly. Sources include fruits, breads and grains, starchy vegetables and sugars. Make at least half of the grains you consume whole grains. Whole grains and fruit are full of fiber, which reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and helps maintain normal blood glucose levels.

Protein

Protein is the major structural component of cells and is responsible for the building and repair of body tissues. Protein is broken down into amino acids, which are building blocks of protein. Nine of the 20 amino acids, known as essential amino acids, must be provided in the diet as they cannot be synthesized in the body. Ten to 35 percent of your daily calories should come from lean protein sources such as low-fat meat, dairy, beans or eggs.

Fat

Fat is an energy source that when consumed, increases the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins including vitamins A, D, E and K. Twenty to 35 percent of your daily intake should come from fat. Choose healthy options such as omega-3-rich foods like fish, walnuts and vegetable-based oils. Omega-3s help with development and growth. Limit intake of saturated fats such as high-fat meats and full-fat dairy. Other smart choices include nuts, seeds and avocado.

Vitamins

Vitamin C is necessary for the synthesis of collagen, which provides structure to blood vessels, bone and ligaments. Rich sources include citrus fruits, strawberries and peppers. Folate, found in foods, helps to prevent birth defects. Pregnant women or women who plan to become pregnant should speak with their physician about taking a folic acid supplement, the synthetic form of folate, in addition to their diet. Vitamin D helps to maintain calcium homeostasis. It can be found in food sources or synthesized by the sun.

Minerals

Sodium helps to maintain fluid volume outside of the cells and helps cells to function normally. Keep intake under 2,400 milligrams per day. Potassium maintains fluid volume inside and outside of cells and prevents the excess rise of blood pressure with increased sodium intake. Rich sources include bananas, potatoes and tomatoes. Calcium helps to maintain and build strong bones and teeth. Include three servings of calcium-rich foods per day including milk, low-fat cheese and yogurt.

Water

Water helps to maintain homeostasis in the body and transports nutrients to cells. Water also assists in removing waste products from the body. All beverages and high-moisture foods such as soup and watermelon contain water and count towards your daily water requirement. Adults should consume 25 to 35 milliliters of fluids per kilogram body weight or 2 to 3 liters per day.

What Are the Health Benefits of Eating Fresh Vs. Frozen Fish?


Although it might seem that fresh fish would a healthier choice than frozen, the truth is that both fresh and frozen fish can be healthy choices, as long as you store and prepare them properly. The freshness of the fish, along with how it was frozen and how quickly it was frozen, can impact its taste and texture, as well as its bacterial content.

Spoiling

Both fresh and frozen fish can spoil. Eating fish within a few days ensures that it doesn't have time to spoil. Store fresh fish for no longer than one to two days in the refrigerator before eating. Frozen fish can spoil if it thaws during transport. Look for signs of possible spoilage, such as rips or tears in the packaging. Don't refreeze seafood once it thaws. If you buy frozen fish, don't pick packages stored above the chill line. If fresh fish has an ammonia-like odor, it might be starting to spoil.

Bacterial Contamination

Freezing fish halts bacterial growth that can make you sick. Eating fresh fish or keeping it in the refrigerator can also retard bacterial growth. Undercooking fish is the main cause of bacterial infections contracted from fish, such as shigella, salmonella, vibrio cholerae, staphylococcus or clostridium. If you don't thaw fish thoroughly before cooking, slightly frozen areas might not cook all the way through. Cook to an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit. Bacteria also can grow during the thawing process, if you thaw fish in warm environments such as the kitchen. Thaw fish in a bowl of cold water or in the refrigerator.

Nutrition

Freezing doesn't reduce the nutritional content of fish, in most cases. Protein, fat and fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A and D aren't affected by the freezing process itself. But when you thaw the fish, you can lose some of the water content as the fish thaws. The water can contain some of the water-soluble vitamins and minerals. If you use all the water lost from the fish for cooking, you will retain the vitamins and minerals. Because fresh fish doesn't lose any of its water content, it won't lose any vitamins or minerals.

Taste and Appearance

While they don't affect your health directly, the taste and appearance of fish can affect your willingness to eat it. Because fish contains lean protein and essential omega-3 fatty acids, it's a valuable addition to your diet. Most people can't tell the difference between fresh and appropriately frozen fish, the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute says on the What Cooking America website. Fish can turn slightly mushy, with an unappealing texture, if thawed in warm water or in a warm room.

Potential Benefits of Multivitamins



Multivitamins are dietary supplements that come in tablet, capsule or pill form and provide you with an array of essential vitamins and minerals. You can find them in most grocery stores, as well as health food stores. Taking a multivitamin every day may provide several health benefits. A pregnant woman has much higher vitamin needs than a non-pregnant woman because she's supporting the life and nutritional needs of her baby. Thus, a doctor may suggest a pregnant woman take prenatal multivitamins that provide a wide array of vitamins designed to provide the nutrients needed by the woman and the baby. Regular use of a prenatal multivitamin can help decrease the risk of numerous congenital anomalies in the baby, according to an August 2006 meta-analysis published in the "Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Canada," a peer-reviewed medical journal that focuses on women's health, obstetrics and gynecology. The meta-analysis analyzed the results of 41 studies.

Improved Cognitive Functioning

As people age, their cognitive functioning may decrease. A May 2007 medical research study published in "Nutrition Journal" analyzed 910 women and men ages 65 or older. The study found that the use of a multivitamin helped reduce the risk of micronutrient deficiencies and also helped to improve cognitive functioning in some of the group's subsets, including those ages 75 and older.

Improved Energy

Multivitamins contain several vitamins, such as B-complex vitamins and vitamin C, that may help improve your body's energy. Arizona State University's wellness office suggests students take a daily multivitamin for improved energy and a better physical response to the various stress factors encountered in college life.

Is Water Intake Important For Skin Health and Beauty?


We all know the rules for beautiful, clear skin. Apply plenty of sunblock. Cleanse well. Get plenty of sleep and drink your 8 glasses of water per day. But how essential is drinking plenty of water for beautiful skin?

Water's importance in maintaining proper health is indisputable. 70% of the body is made up of water, and it is a vital component of any healthy diet. So many of the body's functions require water: it keeps your bowels regular, flushes toxins from your body and energizes your muscles.



True or false: drinking plenty of water helps your skin to glowThere is, however, surprisingly little evidence of the ability of water to improve the condition and appearance of the skin. After water is ingested, it has to be absorbed by the digestive system, then filtered through the kidneys and then diverted to all the internal organs before it reaches skin cells, meaning that most of it will be eliminated before it ever reaches the dermis.

There is also no evidence that drinking more water allows the body to retain more moisture, in the skin or in any other part of the body. A dehydrated person will have drier, scaly skin, but if you are properly hydrated there is no evidence that drinking extra water can 'plump up the skin' or give it a glow.

In a test done by Dr. Mehmet Oz for his popular TV show, Dr. Oz, he compared the skin conditions of a pair of twins, one of whom drank no water for a week, but took in water only through food. At the end of the week, there was no difference in the condition of the skin of both girls. A study done by the British Nutrition Foundation also concluded that there currently appears to be very little scientific evidence relating to the effects of water consumption on skin hydration, and whether drinking more or less water actually has any impact on skin appearance. Researcher Heather Yuregir said: "Drinking water for the sake of drinking water really has no effect on improving the appearance of skin."
“Humans aren’t like plants. Our skin doesn’t perk up when we consume water,” concurs Katie Rodan, a dermatologist in the San Francisco Bay area and a coauthor of Write Your Skin a Prescription for Change.


So how can we keep skin hydrated?

Your skin type, whether it’s dry, oily, or a veritable combo platter, is largely determined by your genes. That natural moisture level then fluctuates depending on what your skin’s protective lipid barrier is exposed to. This lipid layer helps keep moisture in and germs and irritants out. (That’s why dry skin can become red and itchy.)Most of the appearance of the skin is in the outermost layer of the epidermis. If this topmost layer doesn't contain enough water, skin will lose elasticity and feel rough.



Some ways to improve hydration in this layer include minimizing exposure to dehydrating elements such as low humidity, harsh winds, dry heat, high altitude, sun and air-conditioners. Skin cleansers and products that strip the skin of natural oils, or contain alcohol can also be very harsh on the skin.
Eating foods rich in Vitamins A, B, C and E, contained in a range of fruit and vegetables, help keep the skin elastic, protect it from age-related damage and help with the growth of new skin. Foods rich in the essential fatty acids found in walnuts, flaxseed, salmon, and olive oil can also help skin cells stay hydrated. If you have very dry skin or eczema, consider flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil, or borage-oil supplements. All are good sources of alpha or gamma linolenic fatty acids. A study by the Institute of Experimental Dermatology, in Germany, showed flaxseed or borage oil supplements can help increase skin moisture and reduce roughness.



A good moisturizer is also a good first defense against drying skin. Key ingredients to look for include stearic acid and emollient ceramides. Don't forget to protect your skin from the drying and aging effects of the sun with a good high-SPF sunscreen.

Mouth Hygiene



We all want our teeth to look good and have nice smelling breath but can bad mouth hygiene affect our health?

Digestion starts in the mouth, ideally our teeth should break down our food into a liquid before we swallow it. If you have cracked teeth, missing teeth, sore gums or pain from cavities it is going to be harder for you to chew your food to a liquid, which may lead to digestive problems.

The way our teeth meet, what dentists refer to as our dental occlusion, can have a big effect on our health. If your teeth don’t fit together properly, you may experience problems with:


Grinding
Pain in your jaws, neck, shoulders and even your back
Ringing in your ears
Headaches or migraines – especially in the morning
Pain behind eyes
Sinus pains

Many people have imperfect occlusion but you will be more likely to suffer with this if you have missing teeth.There also appears to be a relationship between bad periodontitis (inflammation and bleeding of the tissues around the teeth) and other inflammatory conditions such as coronary heart disease, insulin resistance and arthritis. Looking after our mouth hygiene prevents periodontitis and inflammation around the body that may be associated with it.

How what we eat can affect our teeth

To keep our teeth healthy we know we need to cut back on sugar but why?
Put simply:

Saliva and bacteria in our mouth forms plaque – this plaque and sugar forms acid – this acid causes tooth decay.

Our teeth can also be exposed to acid through foods; some common acidic foods are:

Wine
Fruit juice
Fruit
Soft/pop drinks and
Vinegar
Fresh lemon squeezed in water

Do not immediately brush your teeth after they have been exposed to acidic foods, hard brushing when the environment in the mouth is acidic may weaken them further; it is better to wait and brush them later, when the mouth has returned to a more alkaline state.

What you can do immediately after eating acidic foods, is to try to neutralise the mouth with something alkaline. You could eat something alkaline such as nuts or drink green tea. Another good tip is to rinse your mouth out with bicarbonate of soda mixed into water; this is a particularly effective thing to do for people who like to start the day with lemon squeezed into hot water, which is acidic.

The following vitamins and mineral will help to maintain the health of your teeth:

Calcium, magnesium (dark green leafy vegetables)
Vitamin D (oily fish)
Phosphorous (pumpkin seeds) – It is very rare to be deficient in this and there would be no need to supplement
Vitamin C (vegetables)

Getting rid of bad breath

The main causes of bad breath are tooth decay and gum disease. You can prevent these by removing any build-up of plaque with brushing, flossing and visiting the dental hygienist regularly.

Bad breath can also be caused by sinusitis (inflammation of the lining of the nose), gastritis (inflammation of the lining of the stomach) and stomach food reflux (heart burn). If you think you may suffer from one of these then speak to your doctor.

You could try chewing gum which has been sweetened with 100% xylitol, to make your breath feel fresher and reduce dental plaque.

Do I need fluoride in my toothpaste?

Fluoride is added to our water and most toothpaste. It is also found in foods such as stewed black tea, coffee, raisins and white wine. Most of us have been brushing fluoride onto our teeth at least twice a day since we grew teeth – is it time we stopped?

Dentist, Mark Breiner in his book about understanding the impact of dentistry on total health says:

‘Fluoride is a poison, and there is enough of it on one standard tube of toothpaste to kill a 20-pound child. It is a waste product of the aluminium and fertilizer industries. When it is introduced into a living body, fluoride acts as an enzyme inhibitor that interferes with cellular functioning’. Breiner, M A (2011) WHOLE BODY DENTISTRY. As fluoride is a poison, applying it topically to the teeth will prevent bacteria growth and cavities but are there safer ways to kill bacteria in the mouth?

Several companies now make fluoride free toothpaste containing ingredients like, bicarbonate of soda, salt or tea tree. Swapping over to these is a great way to maintain oral hygiene whilst avoiding fluoride.

What Really Makes You Healthy


What your mind, body, and spirit need most.

In her book The Power Is Within You, Louise L. Hay wrote that “the point of power is always in the present moment.” To make the most of the present moment, a healthy lifestyle is an integral component of your journey toward well-being and wholeness. I refer to the healthy-lifestyle components of The LifeLine Technique philosophy as the Five Basics for Optimal Health. It’s important to make sure that you maintain the proper quantity, quality, and frequency of: water, food, rest, exercise, and owning your power. More than optimal health, however, the Five Basics are essential acts of self-love.

Tool #1: Water—Water Is Life

Water is the most crucial, nonnegotiable component of optimal health. After all, you can live for extended periods without food, but not without water. Why is it so essential? Your entire body is 75 percent water. Your blood is 82 percent water. Your lungs are 90 percent water. Your brain is 90 percent water. In fact, water plays a role in every function of your body, from regulating temperature and cushioning joints to bringing oxygen to cells and removing waste. One of the little-known facts about the importance of water is that it greatly contributes to our ability to process emotions. Emotions, e-motions, are energy in motion. Water conducts electricity. Without water, the body can’t maintain its basic functions, including manufacturing enough energy to process emotions.

Tool #2: Food—Understanding the Body’s Ecology

When you think about the concept of “eating healthy,” what comes to mind? For a lot of people, it means going on a diet. But more and more evidence is showing that diets don’t work, and in fact, they often create a vicious cycle of yo-yo weight loss and gain. On top of that, going on a diet is often all about calories and not about how to truly nourish your body. So, where do you begin when you want to start a healthy eating program? The one that I’ve recently found to best complement and support The LifeLine Technique is described in The Body Ecology Diet by Donna Gates. Donna and I both teach that good digestive health is fundamental for feeling your best. On both a mind and body level, your digestive system breaks down and extracts the nutrients your body needs to heal, regenerate, and thrive. Body Ecology teaches us to reconnect with nature and with traditional, whole foods as a way of living.

Tool #3: Rest—Restoring Balance with Sleep

High on the list of symptoms that new clients frequently discuss with me is insomnia or restlessness. Typically, they all have several lifestyle issues in common: emotional overload or high levels of stress; poor bowel habits; consuming too much caffeine; and eating processed foods high in cane sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, white flour, and white rice. Many have also used doctor-prescribed sleeping pills, causing a drowsy effect, which then leads them to consume even more caffeine in order to feel awake during the day. Sleep deprivation affects the body’s immune system. It can speed up the aging process and the onset of metabolic or hormonal imbalances. The act of sleeping not only allows your body to heal, but it also enables your mind to process and integrate your life experiences. Making sure you receive quality rest and relaxation is one of the most significant steps you can take to reduce the stress of modern living and create inner peace and balance.

Tool #4: Exercise—Making Time to Move and Play


We already know the benefits of exercise—increasing energy levels, relieving stress, improving sleep—and it can have a major impact on reversing disease processes. However, have you ever considered exercise as an opportunity just to have fun? I used to have my own struggles with creating time for play and exercise. I had to get serious about personal fitness in order to overcome the challenge of being crunched for time. Now I play tennis, swim or run outside with my children whenever we get a chance, and work out once a week with a trainer who inspires me and encourages me to laugh as she’s pushing me to bring out my best! Take a moment and imagine all the ways you can combine exercise and fun with your friends and family—walking on the beach, taking a hike, or riding your bike. Children are more inclined to model the behavior they observe: when you engage in a consistent exercise program, you teach them the value of self-care.

To own your power is to embrace every aspect of your life with passion, purpose, and courage…knowing that every day, in every way, each experience that you encounter represents the possibility to be so much more. What Vitamin and Mineral Supplements Can and Can’t Do


Boost energy, lose weight, beat stress, improve performance, and reduce wrinkles! Do these phrases sound familiar?

These are just a few of the promises found on the labels of vitamin and mineral supplements. But can vitamin and minerals really live up to these claims, or is it more hype than truth? Is there evidence that a vitamin or mineral supplement really can turn a bad diet into a healthy one, melt pounds away, or put the zip back in your step?

Experts say there is definitely a place for vitamin or mineral supplements in our diets, but their primary function is to fill in small nutrient gaps. They are " supplements" intended to add to your diet, not take the place of real food or a healthy meal plan.

Food First, Then Supplements

Vitamins and other dietary supplements are not intended to be a food substitute. They cannot replace all of the nutrients and benefits of whole foods.

"They can plug nutrition gaps in your diet, but it is short-sighted to think your vitamin or mineral is the ticket to good health -- the big power is on the plate, not in a pill," explains Roberta Anding, MS, RD, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association and director of sports nutrition at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.

It is always better to get your nutrients from food, agrees registered dietitian Karen Ansel. "Food contains thousands of phytochemicals, fiber, and more that work together to promote good health that cannot be duplicated with a pill or a cocktail of supplements."

What Can Vitamin and Mineral Supplements Do for Your Health?

When the food on the plate falls short and doesn’t include essential nutrients like calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12, some of the nutrients many Americans don’t get enough of, a supplement can help take up the nutritional slack. Vitamin and mineral supplements can help prevent deficiencies that can contribute to chronic conditions.


Numerous studies have shown the health benefits and effectiveness of supplementing missing nutrients in the diet. A National Institutes of Health (NIH) study found increased bone density and reduced fractures in postmenopausal women who took calcium and vitamin D.
